Why This Website Was Created
Many people are frustrated by the overwhelming amount of information available. It can be difficult to decide which news sources to trust. This nonpartisan website exists to help people make good choices when consuming news. This is done through the development of what is called “news literacy” skills. These skills include how to think critically, find reliable news sources, separate fact from opinion, and spot bias to name a few. The resources found on this site function as a self-teaching tool. There is a dizzying array of media and news literacy resources available online. A search yields many single websites from which to choose. I have spent time finding and collecting the sites I feel are the most accessible for people wanting to get to the heart of news literacy fast and easy. Some of these websites were created for educators. If you are not a teacher just approach them as a treasure trove of materials to learn from. These resources have been gathered on this website so that people can help themselves become more confident consumers of news media.
The focus of my master’s project was media literacy. As a middle school librarian and 8th grade Social Studies teacher for 21 years, I taught media literacy. This umbrella term is the ability to find, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms, including print, video, and online.
